Opening Savy....

Ok, I hijacked the name Colonel Davenport and have used it as I saw fit. I had great ideas about a broad based Quad City Blog site that exceeded the typical “my back yard” dialogues of the day; but it just never took off the way I had hoped. I walked away, but can’t help coming back to the blog world.

So here I am again, and all I care about is this great city of Davenport and issues that impact cities like Davenport. Let’s see how it goes. It's good to be back!!!

Yours Truly,

George

Did you really father your two sons (George Jr. and Bailey) with your wife's daughter from a previous marriage? And did you also father a daughter with one of your servants? Say it aint so George. How was the Galena post office?

You really need to adress 5-24-2006 5:24pm's issue.

Is it not interesting that Niky Bowles in her fight against River R. brought up all the issues and had it right about the future failure of the project. No one would listen. Does she now have the right to say "I told you so?" I know the greeks have a word for it. Maybe we need to listen to Niky more often. She may be pushy, she may be over dressed at City Hall, she may be to wordy, but in the end if she is right--listen

It looks like Niky's back! Who is pushing her now? So she hit it right on a few things that does not give her license to spread her crap around city hall.

Let us not kick the Moose that has laid a golden egg for downtown Davenport. Remember he is sick and going through treatment every day. Let him alone Niky.

We need to find a way to save this project because we will be paying for it for 20 years in many cases. That is our obligation to the Vision Iowa Fund. That is, unless we are willing to find $20 million and get out from under.

Maybe Bill Lynn (Professor of Economics)can do a long range cost benefit analysis on the project and come up with some alternatives.

ONE idea that I head was that we could deed the Figge to the 1st Army Headquaters and make part of it living quarters for the 3-Star and the other part of it his offices. That is a little way out to say the least. The other was to turn RME into visiting officer's quarters that will be needed for Rock Island Arsenal's new mission with the First Army.

I think a better idea would be to take and have the people who run the Howard Johnson to lease their facility to the Army for enlisted people and visiting officers. That makes more sense. They could put up a fence around the facility and limit general public access. That sounds as good as the two goofy recommendations that I noted above.

When the boat sails away, will that cause Davenport to have to pay back the $20 million. It was included in the total project just to make it look bigger by D1. Maybe they will regret including what was going to happen downtown anyway in the project?

Will we every learn?

The only redeeming quality about Niky is that she ticked off Phil. Other than that she is a bankrupt, hideously dressed, annoying person who must take great pleasure in being such a pain in the ass.

Pay attention - the boat may sail but the gambling is staying here. It is time to update our thinking and go with the Vegas-style gaming operations that have become so popular. This does not fit downtown, both is size and theme.

Move it on the West side of Daveport near the interstate system. Davenport can really benefit from this. Don't screw it up! Again, pay attention closely. This will determine who on the city council are the smart, innovative thinkers and who are the ones that continue to be Davenport One lackeys. The bloggers always whine that the council needs to build Davenport and showcase it. Here is a fantastic opportunity to pull in some huge travel and tourism dollars with a showcase complex off of our interstate system.

I will be watching closely because this will tell me who gets my vote next election.

I was born in Chicago and I came to Davenport to study at St. Ambrose like so many of my friends have done. I went back to Chicago after I graduated from St. Ambrose and worked for a while. A few years ago, I came back to Davenport and decided to stay. My wife was from the West Coast, but she liked Davenport because it is not as big as Chicago and her college training in nursing could be used in this area. She is a nursing supervisor. We read the Chicago Tribune on a regular basis to keep abrest of what is happening in Chicago and because a lot of my family still lives there.

We had to go to the West Coast over the holidays and left Davenport on November 15th. When we got back yesterday, I had a stack of Tribunes to look at. Boy, will I have recycling paper this week.

I was going through the paper last night and this morning and I came across an article by Colleen Mastony written on November 17, 2006 about Small Zoo's. I almost did not read it until I saw the photographs of the Mountain Lions. That struck me and I read the article. I could not believe what I read and what I know about Davenport.

I am a big supporter of the Arts. We professiona's have been schooled to have some culture. That is what Liberal Arts Colleges do for you. It helps in business and makes us a cut above the average blue collar workers. Sometimes I take my clients to the Figge, JOD, IMAX and even Fejervary Zoo. My wife and I even had a party at the zoo for one of my children two years ago. It was great deal, the price was right, and the children invited enjoyed the petting zoo area and all the bunnies that were on tables to have the children pet them. The horses, especially the white one, that greeted the children. Many of them had not seen small horses up close.

We went up to the mountain lion area and there was this older man talking to the mountain lions. We thought that strange until he got one of the mountain lions to "meow" and that surprised me. You normally do not think of a mountlain lion making that type of should when they are full grown. My son said that was the best birthday party he has ever had.

When I read Alderman Brooke's comment about where the future of Davenport was, I almost fell off my chair. He said the future was the Mississippi River and not the zoo on the hill. Hey--Charlie are you going to tell Mr. Waterman that he was stupid to build the IMAX on that hill? Do you want the Putnam and the IMAX to go down the tube? I guess you do because you think the green space on the River is the place to be. When I read the local papers about the Boat looking at other options and not on the River, I thought what is happening?

I belong to the Putnam, Figge, Friends of Vander Veer, Naabi, etc. I support the arts. I even belong to the Lincoln Park Zoological Society. I am sorry to say that I do not belong to the Fejervary Zoological Society because I do not know how to get in touch with them. I am going to try after reading the comments of Alan Guard and Alderman Brooke. I think that they needed to cut the dollars going to the zoo because of the stupid things that they have done downtown and the lack of people supporting those investments. We will all have to support them. I understand we have a 20 year obligation with Vision Iowa to keep them running or pay back the money they gave us.

Do we remember that we are a town composed of many people who are not professional? This is a town with the salt of the earth. People who work with their hands in factories, Oscar Mayer, Rock Island Arsenal, etc. Just because Alderman Brooke does not like to associate with those kind of people does not make his ideas the only game in town. The junk that he has proposed on the River will not bring people from Chicago here. It will not bring them from C.R. or any place else.

The Fejervary Zoo is close to a lot of people in Davenport. Some may not know that it has back in operation. Why? Because it does not get the publicity that Naabi gets nor what Vander Veer gets. Who is behind those venues? The professional people and not the working people. The zoo needs improvements and that is what Lincoln Park Zoo does all the time. It improves. Thank God it has good management which is lacking at the Parks Department.

Mr. Brooke, talking about the River. The Mississippi is a working river. Go to New Orleans and you will see that from the deck at the Hilton. We run our working businesses off the river so that the QC Times can have a clear view from their spot on 4th Street. Jobs will go to other places and people may move out of Davenport to be closer to their jobs. Good job Alderman Brooke. What next? Get rid of Rock Island Arsenal?

Maybe I am missing something. Maybe there is a condo going down on the spot where River Grain and Builder is at now. What about Block and Company? Don't they own their land on the river? What are we going to have to give them to move out? What about the old K.S.T.T radio building and the other buildings along there?

The Figge was doing o.k. on the hill, but someone felt that downtown was the place to go. It allowed the city to include it in the Vision Iowa package to get a few bucks. The moving of the Figge over to other side of street on the hill, toward the Fejervary Park would have provided the best vista in town of the Mississippi River Valley. All one has to do is go to the area in the IMAX that you pass through when you leave the performance. The view is almost breath taking. See Mr. Brooke you don't know the value of the hill or do you? The value maybe to one of your cronies!

As you can see, the article in my hometown newspaper has got me all worked up. I shouldn't really care because I can go to Lincoln Park Zoo when I go home to visit and take my children. But, my children have fond memories of their recent visit to Fejervary Zoo. They also like to see the lighting display which I hope will be back this year.

Who is this clown from Chicago calling blue collar workers. Without us there would be no Davenport. Just because I don't have a "liberal arts degree or something" does not mean that I don't like the Putnam or the IMAX. I like the Zoo and think we need to upgrade it. I thought years ago we voted the Hotel tax to do that. What did someone do hi-jack that money for one of their pet projects?

We need to kick some butt if that happened. That horses backside Brooke needs to get out of town because he has screwed it up!

There are a lot of those Aldermen down there that need to find another pass time besides screwing up Davenport and giving us Garbage Taxes, Rainwater Taxes, etc.

I am thinking of moving the Eldridge where they seem to have more common sense than they do in Davenport or Bettendorf.

Maybe that is why we Democrats kicked some serious butt recently!

Move to Eldridge you stupid Democrat. You are the reason we are going to fulfill Osma Bin Lauden's vision of the United States as Islamic Run Country before the end of the century. Your children will be muslim or dead. For that matter you may also fall into the line for beheading. Nice going you geek!

Colonel, How does it feel to have the city of your name sake be the laughing stock of the QCA. You need to step up and demand that the council be replaced by group of people that accually have held a job at one point of their lives. Let Davenport be run by those who live in Davenport and not the surrounding cities/towns.
