CITY HALL SQUAWKING….

No, not the politicians at City Hall!! I saw the crows are back in front of city hall, right in front of Mayor Ed’s office. Look for Dee and Chief Bladel to go shooting some crows to hang them (if you remember the early 2001 solution).

I need a day of Tuesday down time. So feel free to act like the crows and squawk about anything.

Be good - George

Per the QCT:
“This technology is not going to go away,” he said (Bladel). “We have to embrace it and hold each other accountable to use it in a responsible manner. The reality is, with the police department, public oversight is there. The council has never failed to hold me accountable to them.”

What a joke. This council lets Bladel do anything (and actually nothing) he wants....

The city councils of LeClaire and Princeton have not broken the law by using Tax Increment Financing. They are using the law as it is written and we should expect them to do just that. If Scott County does not like the law, I recommend that they appeal to the state legislature to change it rather than criticize communities who apply the law to benefit residential growth.

There is another side of the issue, too. Although home building TIF reduces or eliminates sharing of property taxes with the county or the local school districts for a set number of years, there is a macro effect, which should be considered, such as:

* Student population in local schools is increased, which means that state and federal assistance is increased.

* Builders and developers pay fees to Scott County for permits, inspection fees, recording documents and other services due to the development of homes.

* People who buy houses built with TIF financing spend their money within the entire region, which strengthens economic viability and increases sales tax revenues.

* If the land involved in TIF financing had not been developed due to a lack of incentive for builders to come to LeClaire, the sales tax generated would be zero.

I hope that the residents of Bettendorf and Davenport realize that their towns benefit from the growth of housing in LeClaire and Princeton in terms of the money spent and sales taxes paid to their communities by these new residents.

Jim L. Collins

This is coming to Davenport, city better keep an eye on this:

From the DM Register-

The City Council on Monday approved an ordinance that will impose tougher regulations on after-hours nightclubs in the wake of several recent violent incidents at Club City, 1820 E. Army Post Road.

The unanimous vote puts provisions of the ordinance into effect immediately, giving the city more leeway to shut down problem clubs if it is deemed necessary.

After-hours establishments allow patrons to bring their own alcohol inside after 2 a.m., but they do not have liquor licences.

The stricter regulations will force after-hours clubs to operate more like liquor-licensed establishments such as bars and restaurants.

Crows

One's bad, Two's luck, Three's health, Four's wealth, Five's sickness, Six is death.

How many did you see?

How appropriate that the crows call city hall home. I'm sure that a few of the powers to be will be eating crow in the near future.

Crows in the downtown. Problem here in Cedar Rapids for years. One thing that actually did work is nailing the carcasses of dead crows up in trees.

And why are people posting on a non-related item on this story? Don't you edit?

Those crows are there because of the Moose. They are waiting for him to Eat Crow for saying the future of Davenport is the river. The future of Davenport will be when we get JOBS to keep our cildren here. I have lost several of my children to places like North Carolina, Arizona and Texas. We need to get people in the City Hall of davenport that are pro jobs.

We need to let the boat move so they can survive. We need the dollars that they give the city to keep taxes down.

Exactly! Very well said. We need to pay attention to who on the council are trying to help business and attract new business. Help business but not give away the farm! Those are the aldermen that need to be voted back.

To 6:46.
Hey pal, have you not been watching this disfunctional council sink our beloved ship for the last eleven months. There is no one councilman that should come back. We, the city, have become stagnant and unappealing. I was talking to two Bett. police officers and they asked me "Is it as screwed up in Dav. as we read?" They went on to say that they hurry to open the newspaper each day to catch up on the "As the Council Turns." How sad.

Responding to 12/08 6:04 P.M.

How many times have you gone to a Comm Of The Whole or City Council meeting? If not, do you keep up to date on city government by watching the replays on the public information channel. I am willing to bet if you answer honestly that your reply is no to either question. Do you depend on the Quad City Times for your information? Oh brother! I am actually there or watch on tv and you have to really watch to understand what goes on and who is working hard for the tax payers. Most of the time the newspaper accounts leave alot to be desired and you do not get the full understanding of how the council works. There are aldermen like Meyer, Hamerlinck and Ambrose that are asking the right questions and not just accepting what is being presented. Some like Dumas, Frink, Howard and Van Fossen are puppets or just sit there and take up space. Those are the ones that need to go.

But back to the main issue. If you are depending on your city information from Bettendorf cops, then you are a fool. Get down to the meetings or watch the replays and make your own informed decisions. Don't be one of the sheep. Be an individual!

To 7:49, You seem to be one of those narrow minded fools that had come aboard the sinking ship (the council) in the last few months.

To answer you question, I am very involved in this city, I see both sides of the coin, and had been at more city council meetings than the average person. And no, I do not watch it on cable because there is so much being left out by the angle of the camera along with the poor lighting, and I do not buy the QC Rag (Times).

Do yourself a favor and reveiw your notes and you will see that this council is disfunctional. They even took a class together (tax payers money) to teach them to get along. It did not work!

I'll give this, Keith Meyers is about the only one who deserves to come back. The rest can take a hike!!

If you are so involved in this city, then what are you personally doing to make it better? All we hear is you running it down.

I agree with 6:04, I too, am not happy with the council. If this guy has the balls to speak his mind and weather you like it or not, he has the right to voice it. It makes folks like you think for a change. My advise, get over it.
