Lazy, no good trash dumping folks!!!!!!

In a town of 96,000 most of our problems can be traced to a handful of jerks. Want to lower crime, move out the gang associated family of the Howard’s and all their cousins and we would have a good start at it. Such an ill thought one day after Christmas?

Not really. You see, a friend of mine called me this morning and told me about his dumpster at work filled to the brim with garbage bags. Stuffed with boxes and wrapping, the sloth’s at nearby apartment complexes are likely the wrong doer’s. That, or lazy slobs that are unaware of the free bag privileges this week.

You see, I have been rather impressed with what the City has done over the last few years. Automated garbage, increased efforts in public safety and until this year, increased manpower to environmental enforcements.

All of this, because of a handful (in terms of our overall population base) of inconsiderate, self-absorbed slobs that have little concern for their community. This isn’t the poor or the John Lewis folks. These folks can be found in all portions of our city.

It’s because of these folks, that government grows larger. A quick solution to our trash issue is to include all residential properties (including apartments) to participate in our containerized trash program. Or maybe more cameras or cops on every corner to deal with a handful of jerks.

Not the thoughts I wanted to start the week out with…

Hey - get rid of the bad landlords who choose to rent to these folks Col. Make it really hard and expensive to rent to bad people and to run a bad rental business.

The Davenport jerk category is not specific to renters.

That's right QCI, we here at Winding Hills pride ourselves in a clean enviroment for this generation and the next:)

Oh my QCI =- you are so green.

The majority of those who dump garbage are renters. They are! So, while I know like one homeowner who is a jerk and doens't take care of their property, the rest are bad renters being enabled by bad landlords.

Make is very expensive and difficult to run a bad rental in Davenport and see the new cleaner and safer Davenprot emerge. Seriously. Get a good solid decent and above all - TOUGH - ordinance and policy passed and see a new city.

COL: There is an overabundance of these jerks south of locust living in the rental properties of many bad landlord jerks. They may be all over the city , but you have to agree that there are more living south of locust. Or, could it be that we just don't make them clean things up south of locust? Some behaviors are just tolerated south of locust that would not be north of locust.

It just takes longer to get the city to pay attention if you live south of locust.

When will be clean up this crappy dirty town?

I think the city staff is lazy.

Where's your evidence that renters are the ones doing the dumping? I suspect that most renters in Davenport live in buildings that don't even use the city garbage system. A recent increase in dumping implies a relationship with the new volume-based garbage fees, which affects only the 1 or 2 unit rental properties.

I'm not saying renters don't do this too, but I just bet there are plenty of homeowners who aren't willing to pay for what they throw away. This isn't an "own it and you'll take care of it better" issue like keeping your lawn mowed or house in good shape. Plenty of jerks in general own houses, so why would they be immune from this particular jerky habit?

FYI, my buddy who had the dumpster filled has his office north of Kimberly and east of Jersey Ridge. So the SLOB's live every where.

Secondly, it's mainly the home owners dumping crap every where. Just ask the DPD, that bust the stupid fools. From the cops I know, it's usually white redneck home owners and some times stupid renters. Especially the new construction dumpsters in Bettendorf.

Usually, the renters just dump on their own grounds.

Colonel,
Since you mention white redneck homeowners I have to ask; have you seen any black redneck homeowners lately? Some of us rednecks take pride in our homes. We also pick up the trash the litterers leave for us in the alley.

Maybe the cops are telling you what you want to hear.

Ask Ian Frink and the other cops what happens really. They will tell you that most of the criminal calls are to the rentals. And ask Dee Bruemmer, most of the dumping and garbage issues are with the rental properties. Where have you been?

Cruiser - The answer is YES, I have. Sometimes my comments are structured to enhance comments. As I said before, the SLOBS are everywhere...

And Anon 7:05, Yah, I understand. Dee wants to control all of the public collection, residential, commercial and all. It's called JOB SECURITY!!! And if we measured homeowner against renter, yah, the renters are bigger slobs. But I would wager, city wide, it's not by much....

Where do you live? Bettendor? You are out of touch with the SOLO area of town and the rental situation in general.

I rent. I did my homework and made sure I was renting from good landlords. The area around my apartment building is clean, and the tennants keep it that way. Yet we too have problems with overflowing dumpsters -- because the neighboring property owners use them! They'll brazenly walk out their back doors, across their yards and chuck bags of trash in the dumpsters in front of us. There are days I can't take my trash out because the dumpsters are overflowing. Owning property doesn't make you any less of slob, not does it automatically increase your sense of sociatal obligation.

Speaking of renters, I have to tell you I had to laugh on my way to work today. I pass by a row of duplexes down the street from my house (NORTH of Locust, if your keeping track), and there is about 5 or 6 trash containers sitting out at the curb waiting for pick-up. Trouble is, pick-up is a day late because of the holiday. I thought to myself, what kind of people live in these duplexes that they can't remember that Christmas was just 3 days ago? Renters just seem to live in a vacuum.

The problem is that many tenants in Davenport are bad ones and many rent from bad landlords because we have no real effective mechanism to monitor rental businesses. We don't track well and we definitely don't hold people accountable.

to 11:29 I'm sure it must be illegal for the slob homeowner neighbors to use the rental dumpsters. Have you brought this problem to your landlord's attention? Have you considered having a neighborhood meeting with these homeowners? Can the hauler or the city fine the homeowners? Can you report the homeowner slobs to the city? Have you asked United Neighbors or the Rental Property Association to assist you and your landlord? You have an ongoing problem affecting tenants in your builing so I hope you take some appropriate actions.
