Containing the Un-Containable??

The local blogs have been itching to make Crime THE issue for the upcoming City Hall elections. And two shootings and a small riot at the Mall are playing into the hands that want to cast the outcome of the next election.

I tend to agree that a prevalent thought in the community was these issues aren’t important as long as they stay in a certain part of town. But we have seen home break-ins, vandalism and assaults spread from Blue Grass to Bettendorf. And the Iowa Quad-Cities isn’t alone. Cedar Rapids and Des Moines are struggling with the crime as well.

A friend of mine asks a good question, that I will put out here for your consideration. Are the solutions to crime achievable by any City Council? Or, is the reality of crime directly related to the economic and social realities of the day?

For what it’s worth, I believe a city council has some opportunities to effectuate change; but not to the degree that most seek. In reality, a large part of crime is a direct result of drugs (hard drugs or alcohol). Limiting the number of liquor licenses and adding more enforcement to the drug trade will move some of this stuff away from Davenport.

But real change needs to come from with-in the culture. Parents responsible for the kids. Marriage that means commitment! Faith that brings community activism. And judicial sentencing that requires prison for those that break the law.

Until then, we tend to try containing the uncontainable.

Stop giving the crimnals a comfortable place to live and mooch. Get rid of them. Get rid of the slum properties and they will go too.

The answer is not limit where a law abiding citizen can buy a beer...but instead how about actually punishing criminals! Make jail an unpleasent experience and therefore more of a deterent, and throw the book at repeat customers!

Alderman Meyers: the bangers have painted gang symbols on the west side (the side that faces Division) of the old Geifman supermarket that is boarded up at Kimberly Road and Division.

Isn't that out of his ward?

Keith looks after the city as a whole, so you don't need to worry which ward it's in. If Keith didn't do all he does, this city would look like crap. Thanks Keith for all you do.

You know what looks like crap? His yard!

Keith, if are about the city, take a look on the west side of Harrison at 10th St. The retaining wall on the south side of Chocolate City is about to fall down on the sidewalk. This is across the street from Central High School and is a clear and present danger to all who pass. I have used the City web site to file a complaint, followed up on it only to see that it was closed out. No action taken! This is BS!!!!

These are all the situations that the "old" NEO looked for and followed up on, from paint markings, to trash, and slum properties. Now that the NEO no longer exist, we will be hard pressed to get help correcting the problems. Way to go Keith!!

First, great post. Second, real tired of the Keith Meyer Fan Club using the blogs of others. get you own blog.

Finally, love when the simple-minded appear here. The first two posters wouldn't last an hour in prison. It is not a comfortable pajama party.

The very things the Colonel points to are key: reducing domestic violence will improve the home situation, will lead to more parental involvement. More than half of the PD calls in any community are for domestic violence. Committed relationships are a critic al element of reducing that social problem.

Love to see some solutions and dialog on this. Less Keith, more anything else.

It's amazing how unsafe Davenport is getting to be. You can't feel safe downtown, out at the mall, homeless panhandling on the bike trail, and pitbulls running off leash in some of the parks. I feel lucky that I didn't get bitten by a dog off leash at Marquette Park. I work hard to pay for all these amenities, and then can't use them because I don't feel safe.

TO 4:19. You are always bitching about Keith's yard, but you never say what you don't like about it. I go by his acreage several times a week, and i've never seen one scrap of trash on either his property or on the public right of way. His sidewalks are well maintained, and yard picked up. So what are you complaining about?

I agree, I drive past Keith daily - atleast once per day and I have NEVER expereinced a feeling like I would call it in to the city. He never seems to have a trash problem. He essentially live on and in a ravine area with trees. He has his drive plowed and seems to care for the exterior. Now, if you go up to his house, it is an old mansion with stuff everywhere. I don't live there and people can't see it from the street. What is your beef brother?

Kieth is a good person - really. He is unlike some of the other councilmen who are ineffective and fake. Tell me what Dumas has done for us lately? Hey that graffitti on the old grocery store is in his ward. I dare you to call him and then see the response.

Sorry to see this great post go down the tubes in a debate over aldermen. I'll say it again - get your own blog and stick to the topic.

The Col is either Jamie Howard or a friend of hers.

We want answers from Ms. Howard about LaHood.

This Keith person you speak of, is he some sort of demi-god? I'm new in town and am thinking of becoming one of his followers. Just call me Squeaky.

I saw Keith on the acble channel last night - I love him.

He is right about crime and the river front and the rest of the city. But, he and others are still missing the connection between crime and bad rentals and housing. GO balls out with enforcement of housing standards and we will see the criminals go elsewhere.

To 9:01, I believe there is hope for all of us, someone in listening! Shut down the bad properties (not just rentals) and the rest will fall into place. Problem is that there are not enough inspectors to go around. At last count there is four.
